Saif Gaddafi trivially charged with failure to license camels

Tripoli, Apr 6 (ANI) : Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Libya's former dictator Muammar Gaddafi, has been trivially charged with issues such as failure to license his camels, the UN human rights campaigners have claimed.

Saif, who was charged reportedly with two counts of crime against humanity, on Nov 19 last year, by the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague, Netherlands, has been held by the Libya militant groups in detention for over 139 days, reports The Telegraph.

The ICC believed that Saif was in a 'legal black hole', and therefore, issued a warrant for the crimes, for which he is required to be summoned at The Hague to face trial.

But the Libyan authorities have refused to contemplate to send him overseas and are not giving any legal justification.

"The Libyan authorities have a clear obligation under UN Security Council resolution 1970 to surrender Saif,", Reed Brody, a researcher at Human Rights Watch claimed who felt that the trial at Libya had put the justice of the 39-yr-old heir of col Gaddafi at stake.

"At no point have the Libyan authorities been legally justified in their failure to surrender him to the ICC," Xavier-Jean Keita and Melinda Taylor said, who are handling Saif's defense.

"The brutal death of Muammar Gaddafi deprived the Libyan people of their right to justice, and their right to the truth. It would be a travesty for the prospects of a free and fair Libyan state if the same were to occur to his son," they added.

But the matter has worsened, as Saif is currently in the captivity of the militias in Zintan, since his capture last year, who have refused to hand him over to the Tripoli government. (ANI)
