Ex F1 ace Coulthard rubbishes Hamilton leaving McLaren rumour

London, Wed, 14 Mar 2012 ANI

London, Mar 14(ANI): Former Formula One driver David Coulthard has dismissed suggestions, which claim former champion Lewis Hamilton will leave McLaren next season after his deal expires.

There has been speculation linking the 2008 Formula One world champion Hamilton with Mercedes, in a bid to replace legendary F1 driver Michael Schumacher.e has also been debated as a potential target for Ferrari as they look to kick start a resurgence of their fortunes.

Coulthard, who has worked for nine years with McLaren, believes there won't be any lack of potential suitors for Hamilton, if he ultimately decides to part ways.

He also believes meeting Hamilton's pay demand might prove to be an obstacle for McLaren or other championship teams.

"I don't think Lewis will ever be out of demand for the top teams." The Sun quoted Coulthard, as saying.

"Fast drivers will always get a drive but what will change is whether the teams can continue to afford to pay drivers what they are used to," he said. When Lewis' contract was done McLaren was part-owned by Mercedes, who paid part of the drivers' salaries. McLaren now don't have a manufacturer to pay part of that salary. They have a business model that needs sponsorship or must get it from shareholders," he added.

Coulthard said that even if other championship teams agree to meet Hamilton's wage demand then providing him with a competitive car would also be a major issue, which, McLaren can provide to him.

"What are Lewis' other options? I'm sure some teams will be willing to pay to get him but it is not just about that. You also want a competitive car and if McLaren give him that, then he will probably stay," he said. (ANI)
