Sri Lanka clinch series with eight wicket win over India

Colombo, aug 11 (ANI): Sri Lanka thrashed India by eight wickets in the Colombo Test, thus winning the three Test series 2-1. The two not out batsmen at the crease for the Lankans were skipper Mahela Jayawardene (50) and Malinda Warnapura (54).

Sri Lanka lost two early wickets in their campaign to win the Test series against India as Harbhajan Singh spun the ball viciously. The bowlers did their job with grit as opener Michael Vandort was wrapped up for a score of eight runs.

While India's second innings lasted only a further 17.4 overs after the dismissal of Rahul Dravid for a quality 68 - his highest score of the series - before lunch, it was left to VVS Laxman with Harbhajan Sing to add invaluable runs to the total.

It was Harbhajan who caused a flutter of uncertainty in the Sri Lanka dressing room, however, when he bowled Michael van Dort for one and should have had Malinda Warnapura trapped lbw, but not for the first time this series has technology being used been at fault.

The delivery pitched in line and the referral was a fair one as the ball would have hit between middle and off.

There was a show of aggression from Bhajji when he threw the ball at the stumps, but the batsman, Warnapura played it with his bat. There was a thought that the batsman may have infringed one of the laws, but as the ball was dead at that stage, the umpire, Rudi Koertzen didn't need to do more than have a few words with the off-spinner.

Kumar Sangakkara's dismissal off the bowling of Zaheer Khan, caught by Gautam Gambhir added to the tension as India pressed for a third wicket and Mahela Jayawardene and Warnapura were force to work hard for their runs.

Yet, at the start of the day, anyone watching would have thought the impossible might yet happen, another Eden Garden's style rescue act involving Dravid and Laxman. (ANI)
