New York, Sept.28 (ANI): The Indian American community here has welcomed the passing of the bill related to the US-India civil nuclear cooperation deal, saying its expected final approval into law by next week, would go a long way in enhancing the strategic relationship between the two countries.
Interacting with ANI on the sidelines of a reception for Indian Americans that was attended by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, a couple of them praised Dr. Singh for his tenacity and will power in staying the course and not succumbing to the opposition's pressure.
Indian American hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal said: "I think this (US-India nuclear deal passing) is really amazing. This is really history which the Prime Minister has created. All our, you know, thanks to the Prime Minister, who is a visionary. And, he did take a chance; he wanted to give up his seat of Prime Ministership for the sake of the nuclear power deal. This is really fantastic."
We also compliment our good friend, President Bush, who really went out of his way to accommodate. We are very proud that finally America made up its mind to have a strategic relationship with India," he added.
Najma Sultana, another NRI and community activist residing in New York, said: "We shall enhance this relationship. It is not between two men, it is between two countries and its two peoples'. And, gradually, both the democracies will continue to be better friends and have a better understanding."
These comments were given shortly after the US House of Representatives passed the bill related to the bilateral nuclear deal by a vote of 298 to 107. Earlier, the US Senate had passed the bill. The bill now goes back to the Senate for final Congressional clearance before being sent to the White House for President Bush to sign into law. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)
