Karnataka offers 1,000 acres of land to Tata

Bangalore, Sept 18 (ANI): Karnataka government today offered 1,000 acres of land in case the company decides to relocate its Nano car project.

After the meeting with State Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, Tata Motors Managing Director G Ravikanth said that Karnataka would give all support, assistance and required incentives in case of re-locating the plant

"The project requires about 1,000 acres of land. It is an integrated project," Ravikanth said.

On the re-location of the plant, he said, "We are considering alternatives if required," indicating that a final decision to pull out from West Bengal in the wake of land allotment row was yet to be taken.

Soon after Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata announced that he was not averse to shift the Nano car project from West Bengal, other states, including Karnataka, Punjab and Haryana invited the company.

The Nano project has been billed as a key to the rejuvenation of industries in West Bengal, where the world's longest-serving democratically elected Communist government has changed tack for industrialization of the State after decades of focus on helping agriculture and poor farmers.

On Tuesday Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said that she didn't want the Tatas to pull out of Singur.

Trouble began after the West Bengal government acquired 1000 acres of farmland for the Tata Motors' Nano'''' small car plant at Singur last year.

The government offered compensation, which some farmers rejected and the state''s main opposition TMC has been demanding that at least 400 acres be returned to farmers.

The government says it is in favour of a land-based solution for farmers but was against disturbing the Tata Motors plant site. (ANI)
