Australia to send largest ever contingent for CWG: Envoy

New Delhi , Wed, 18 Aug 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Aug 18 (ANI): Australia's High Commissioner to India Peter Varghese has said that his country would be sending the largest ever contingent for the 2010 Commonwealth Games beginning on October 3.

Varghese's statement is viewed as vital since the 2010 Delhi Games has been mired in controversies and allegations that may discourage other participating nations.

"Australia is looking forward to successful games in Delhi. We are a sports loving nation. We will be sending a large team to India; our plans are to send a largest team we have ever sent," said Varghese.

'I think we are looking forward to good competition. We are looking forward to a lot of gold medals," he added on the sidelines of a seminar to boost bilateral ties between India and Australia hosted by the Indian Council of World Affairs here on Tuesday.

The Australian High Commissioner to India further said the authorities in his country are well versed with the preparations undertaken by India and are also satisfied with them.

"Well these days if you stage a large international event, you will always have to be very conscious of threats and security issues. That is just a part and parcel of hosting international events whether you are in India or Australia or anywhere else in the world," said Varghese.

"We have been keeping a very close touch with the Indian authorities. We have been fully satisfied with the consultation that they have engaged in. They have been keeping us closely informed of their preparation on the security side and we will continue that," he added.

The Central Vigilance Commission has found irregularities in several Commonwealth Games related works being carried out by civic and construction agencies.

The 12-day sporting extravaganza will be India's biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi. (ANI)
