G 20 summit women protesters given 'repeated rape' threats in custody

Canberra, Fri, 23 Jul 2010 ANI

Canberra, July 23 (ANI): Some of the women arrested during G20 summit protests in Toronto, have accused police of sexually threatening them by making sexually charged remarks while they were held in a makeshift detention centre.

According to news.com.au, the allegations made by these detained women protestors were recorded in two video tapes, played at a media conference organised by the Toronto Community Mobilisation Network in Toronto.

One of the women detainees, Amy Miller, who is also a journalist said that the police told her she would be raped when she was detained for about 13 hours in a cell during the June 26-27 summit of world leaders.

"I was told that they were going to make sure that I was never going to want to act as a journalist again by making sure that I would be repeatedly raped while I'm in jail," she said.

Toronto police spokeswoman Meaghan Gray has said that the police service cannot respond to individual allegations, but said those who have been mistreated by police officers, can file a complaint with the office of the independent review director.

"An officer could lose pay, be dismissed or face criminal charges if found guilty of a serious complaint, but that it "depends entirely on the investigation and on the case," she said.

By the end of the late June summit, police had arrested about 1000 people after peaceful protests erupted into violence and hundreds of people rampaged through the streets of downtown Toronto, smashing storefront windows and torching police cruisers.

Police released more than 850 of those detained without charge during and after the weekend summit. (ANI)
