Bachchan speaks with a heavy heart

The recent casual statement of Jaya Bachchan in a film promotion event on last weekend where she preferred to speak in Hindi over Marathi creating a new controversy with Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena party called it as disrespect to Marathi culture, Amitabh Bachchan spoke about it in his recent blog post.

“The casual off the cuff remarks made by her at the music launch function were without malice or deliberate intent, but if it has caused hurt to the sentiments of Maharashtra, Maharashtrians and indeed the city and citizens of Mumbai, then she must seek regret and offer apology,” wrote Bachchan.

“Everything that we possess today is what came to us from this great state and city. We never have and never can look at Maharashtra with disrespect. If inadvertently this is what has been construed, then we apologise and are sorry and seek forgiveness for any sentiments that have been hurt.”

He further mentioned: “We are all proud Indians. We love our country. We love and respect the place we were born. We love and respect the place where we work and are settled at. Mumbai and Maharashtra has given us glory and recognition. I am 66 years old and 40 of those years have been spent living in Mumbai. Is it ever possible that we will dishonour it? Never!”

Jaya Bachchan has already apologised for her alleged anti-Marathi remark in an interview to Mumbai Mirror. But MNS chief Raj Thackeray is adamant in his approach and has demanded a public apology and even threatened to boycott all films starring any member of Bachchan family.

Maharashtra government, meanwhile, is scrutinising the comment made by Jaya Bachchan. Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said that Mrs Bachchan’s statement would be judged by the police and if found anything provocative would be forwarded to the Law and Judiciary department for action against her.
