TMC wants 300 acres from Singur project area

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Kolkata, Sept 9 (ANI): The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday demanded that 300 acres of land should be given from within the Tata Motors project area in Singur to unwilling farmers.

TMC leader Rabindranath Bhattacharya, after a meeting of the four-member committee formed to discuss the modalities for a land-based solution to the contentious issue, told media persons: "We have sought 300 acres of land from within the project area."

The committee comprising of Bhattacharya, Becharam Manna, West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) Managing Director Subrata Gupta and Hooghly District Magistrate Neelam Meena, will inspect the project area on Wednesday after which they will again hold a meeting.

On Sunday, West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi had read out a statement signed by TMC and the West Bengal government that the government would make efforts to provide maximum land to unwilling farmers from within the project area, while additional land would be provided from adjacent areas.

Later, controversy erupted when TMC chief Mamata Banerjee interpreted "maximum land" as 300 acres, which both the sides had agreed upon.

Following which Tata Motors issued the statement that there was lack of clarity in the Governor's statement and their decision to suspend work at Singur will not be revoked. (ANI)
