Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister meets Manmohan Singh

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

New Delhi, Sept 8 (ANI): Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jeichi, who is on a three-day visit to India, met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh soon after his arrival in New Delhi on Monday.

Jeichi who began his India visit with an overnight stay in Kolkata met West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and expressed Beijing's keen interest in making investments in various fields in India including infrastructure building.

The Chinese Foreign Minister is scheduled to meet his Indian counterpart later in the day.

During his talks in New Delhi the Indian leadership is expected to convey its disappointment over Beijing's stand at the recent Nuclear Supplier's Group (NSG) meet at Vienna for granting clean waiver to New Delhi's nuclear trade.

Beijing's 'anti-India' stand at Vienna surprised New Delhi especially after Chinese President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao had assured Dr. Singh during his China visit that their country would take a constructive stand on the issue.

The 45-member NSG meeting in Vienna on Saturday adopted a one-off waiver proposed by the United States allowing atomic business with India even though it has not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has tested nuclear devices.

Soon after his arrival Yang inaugurated the Chinese Consulate General in the city.

In May, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the Indian Consulate General in Guangzhou city in south China's Guangdong State.

Trade between the world's two most populous countries doubled in the past two years to 38.6 billion dollar in 2007. (ANI)
