Killing of a youth sparks off fresh clashes in Kashmir Valley

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Srinagar, Sept 7 (ANI): The Kashmir Valley was tense on Sunday following fresh clashes between security forces and protesters in the wake of a youth being killed in police firing.

Police had to fire teargas shells and had to baton charge stone-pelting mobs in Srinagar. State Government authorities had to deploy both police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in strength to maintain law and order.

The clashes took place in the Maisuma locality, which is in the heart of the city. Areas like Red Cross, Kokerbazar, Madina Chowk and Nai Sadak were also affected, official sources said.

Sunday's clashes were sparked off after a young Javid Iqbal was killed by a rubber bullet in Nowhatta during a general strike called by separatists in support of their demand for self-determination.

Shops and business establishments were forced to down their shutters after the incident.

Normal activity across the city was paralyzed as groups took to the streets at various places in and around Jamia Masjid. Some shouted pro-freedom slogans.

Only skeletal transport plied on the roads and no curfew has been imposed as yet in the city. (ANI)
