UN marks Sep 15 as International Day of Democracy

Nov 10: With the changing international context in lieu of some conflict prone societies the United Nations in its continuous effort has been trying to bring all regions of the world in the process of democratisation. Keeping in mind the development and respect of human rights along with the safeguard of fundamental freedoms the UN’s work in promoting and assisting democracy can be very well understood and hence the recently mark of September 15 as the International Day of Democracy.

The 192-member of United Nations General Assembly on Thursday declared the day as the International Day of Democracy to be observed every year. In fact UN needs to adopt a more active programme in the promotion of democracy and compelling nations to have democratic governance inside societies.

The resolution passed by UN speaks that democracies share common features, there is no single model of democracy and that it does not belong to any country or region.

According to the resolution passed ‘Democracy’ is a “universal value based on the freely-expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems, and their full participation in all aspects of life”.

The world body also invited all the state bodies, non-government organisations and individuals to come forward and make public awareness to observe this International Day in proper manner. The assembly further asks governments to organise national programmes dedicated to the promotion and consolidation of democracy also through the mentioned better bilateral, regional and international cooperation.
