STORY: An Indian on the payroll of Pakistan's spy agency ISI, was arrested in Bihar in possession of important military secrets, police said on Tuesday (September 22).
Police in Bihar state said they arrested an operative of Islamabad's Inter-Services Intelligence Agency (ISI), under the Official Secrets Act and are interrogating him.
Sudhanshu Sudhakar, the suspected agent was arrested by Special Task Force of Bihar police after a tip-off by Indian Intelligence Bureau and other Intelligence agencies.
Sudhakar, a former Jawan in the Indian Army, was carrying important military secrets, the police said.
"After his arrest in initial interrogation he (Sudhanshu Sudhakar) informed that he has lot of documents containing information related to (Indian) army and army deployment that he was going to share with Kathmandu based Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) member," said Vinit Vinayak, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Patna.
The arrest came days before the foreign ministers of India and Pakistan are set to meet in New York to slowly rebuild ties after the Mumbai attacks in November blamed on Pakistan-based militants.
"It is very important to inform that in Secunderabad the unit he (Sudhanshu Sudhakar) was told to divulge information was related to missiles. Apart from this, he was asked to provide information about ordinance factory going to be established in Rajgir region of Bihar state and EME units in Jammu and Kashmir state. Documents that we recovered mentions information related to this," said Vinit Vinayak, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Patna.
Diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan deteriorated sharply after the Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people and which New Delhi said must have been carried out with the help of Pakistan state agencies. Islamabad denies any involvement.
India suspended formal peace talks since the attacks and has repeatedly pressed Islamabad to do more to crack down on militancy, but the neighbours have since held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of international gatherings.
