Prosecution proposed against Lanka team bus attack culprits
Islamabad, June 10 (ANI): Pakistan's National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports has recommended criminal proceedings against all those security officials who showed incompetence and negligence when the Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked outside the Gaddafi Stadium.
The members also asked the Interior Ministry to speed up their investigations to arrest all those terrorists who were involved in the attack.
Besides, the committee ordered the Auditor General of Pakistan to submit the four-year special audit report of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) before July 15.
The body also asked the Federal Sports Ministry to submit a report on the poor selection criteria followed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for the Universade Games 2009, slated to be held in Bosnia, in which several national ranking players were ignored and discouraged for selection in different games.
The NA panel gave a clean chit to the Federal Sports Minister Shah Jilani and assured him that all the sports bodies including the PCB works under the administrative control of the ministry, The Dawn reports.
The chairman of the committee Jamshed Khan Dasti said: "We have asked the Interior Ministry and provincial home departments to initiate criminal proceedings as early as possible against all those who showed negligence while performing their security duties during the visit of Sri Lankan cricket team."
"Nobody will be spared who has damaged sports in any way. If needed we will meet the President Asif Ali Zardari and the Prime Minister and request them to abolish all those legislations which are badly hurting the sports in the country and were implemented during the tenure of the former President Pervaiz Musharraf."
At least six policemen escorting the Lankan team bus were killed, along with a driver while seven cricketers and an assistant coach were injured on March 3 when 14 gunmen with grenades and rocket launchers attacked the visiting team. (ANI)
