Robbers enter home as couriers; flee with cash, jewellery

National, Tue, 26 May 2009 IANS

New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) In a daring daylight robbery, four armed men Tuesday barged into an east Delhi house posing as courier men, tied the hands and feet of a woman and her daughter, and looted Rs.150,000 in cash and jewellery worth millions of rupees.

One of the robbers pressed the door-bell of the house in Krishna Nagar on the pretext of delivering a courier package, while the other three, with muffled faces, waited nearby, police said.

'Anisha, 19, opened the door and one of the men asked her to get her photo identity card to verify her identity. As she went inside, three men barged into the house while one took guards at the gate,' said a police officer investigating the matter.

'The robbers then corned Anisha and her mother Sunita, 40, at knife point to one side of the room. They tied their hands and feet and forced them to hand over the keys of the cupboard. According to the family, the robbers took away Rs.150,000 in cash and some jewellery,' said the officer.

The police said the incident came to light when a woman, who reportedly works at the house, entered the place and alerted neighbours and the police.

Sunita's husband Devender Sachdeva and son Saurabh were away at their garments shop in Gandhi Market when the incident happened.

Saurabh said: 'We don't know the exact amount of jewellery the robbers have taken from the house and are ascertaining its value. It could be worth millions (of rupees).'

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Delhi) Anand Mohan said: 'It seems to be the work of professional gang members and our men are working on the case. Further investigations are underway.'
