Recent Events and Developments in Sao Tome and Principe
In 2001 Presidential elections Fradique de Menezes, a businessman, emerged the winner and in 2002 he appointed Gabriel Costa as the PM after his party MLSTP won the Parliamentary elections.
In October 2002 same year De Menezes dismissed the Costa government and named Maria das Neves as the new Premier. The country plunged into political chaos as the military seized power in July 2003 but soon the control reverted back into the hands of the government after the coup leaders were granted a general amnesty.
Bidding for offshore oil blocks started in October 2003 that is expected to speed up development of Sao Tome and Principe economy, however disagreements between the President and PM and numerous corruption scandals led President De Menezes to sack the govt in 2004 September and appoint a new PM.
The March 2006 Parliamentary elections were disrupted owing to protests over pathetic living conditions, however the President?s party MDFM emerged winner after the polls in the 55-seat parliament. 2007 brought some cheer to the country as the IMF wrote 90% of the debts due to it amounting to $360 million.
In 2008 Patrice Trovoda, the opposition leader became the Pm but was soon dismissed after his government was defeated in a no confidence motion passed by the parliament. Following his defeat Rafael Branco was sworn in as the country?s new premier in June 2008.
