1988 turned out to be a momentous year for San Marino as it joined the Council of Europe and followed it up in 1992 by becoming a member of the United Nations.
After coming under scrutiny for its lax tax norms San Marino signed an agreement with OECD in 2002 to curb tax evasion through enhanced transparency in its banking and tax administration.
General elections were held in 2006 in which the Christian Democrats and Socialists shared the spoils equally in the 60-seat San Marino parliament.
In 2008 San Marino?s historic centre and Mount Titano were added by UN to the World Heritage protected sites list.
