Recent Events and Developments in Liberia
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf created history in 2005 when she became Africa?s first woman head of state by winning the Presidential elections. In 2006 Charles Taylor, the former Liberian President appeared before a Sierra Leone court on charges of genocide during his reign. He trial later shifted to the Hague based International Criminal Court.

2006 brought some cheer to Liberia when UN lifted an arms embargo and allowed its timber exports. Also Liberia?s capital, Monrovia that has been without electricity for 15 years received generator-powered lights for the first time.

In 2007 the UNSC also lifted the ban on the exports of Liberia?s ?blood diamonds? that largely funded the regions long standing civil war. However due to increased violence the Un extended its arms and travel embargo on Liberia by another year.

In 2008 the Liberian Supreme Court ruled in Favour of the President appointing local mayors, as the country couldn?t afford the municipal elections that were last held in 1985. April also saw the visit of US President George Bush, the first by any American President.

2008 February - US President George W Bush ends a five-country tour of Africa with a visit to Liberia, one of America's staunchest allies on the continent.
2008 March - Liberia conducts its first census since 1984.
