Recent Developments in Cuba, the Caribbean Country
In 2003 a crackdown was ordered on dissidents against the Castro regime that drew international criticism. The world community led by UNHRC also condemned Cubans miserable human rights record.
2005 brought favourable news for Cubans as the government resumed its diplomatic contacts with EU that were frozen in 2003. However in July 2005 Hurricane Dennis struck Cuba, which caused widespread loss of life and property.
Fidel Castro, the Cuban leader for over 50 years was diagnosed with gastric complications thus handing over reins to his younger brother Raul Castro. Fidel?s illness kept him away from the 50th anniversary celebrations of the 1956 revolution held in 2006.
Continued poor health forced Castro to finally hand over the government reins to Raul in 2008 and himself went into retirement. The year also saw the lifting-off of a long ban on mobile phones and computers.
In a sharp departure from orthodox Marxist principles, the Cuban government abandoned salary equality in 2008 and also lifted curbs on private agricultural land ownership to boost its sagging food production.
