Currently INC is the eldest party of the country that was founded by members of the occultist movement Theosophical Society - Allan Octavian Hume, Dadabhai Naoroji, Dinshaw Wacha, Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee, Surendranath Banerjee, Monomohun Ghose, Mahadev Govind Ranade and William Wedderburn in 1885.

The Indian National Congress played a notable role in India's Independence Movement in which over 15 million members and over 70 million participants struggled against British government in India. Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Abul Kalaam Azad, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Khan Mohammad Abbas Khan, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Chakravarti Rajgopalachari, Jivatram Kripalani Bal Gangadhar Tilak; Bipin Chandra Pal; Lala Lajpat Rai; Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and Surendranath Banerjea were some prominent leaders of Congress Party, whose contribution for the country cannot be forgotten.

After independent since 1947, INC carries out to dominate in the Indian Politics and also ruled most of the time in the centre. Congress has a strong influence of Nehru-Gandhi family and Currently Nehru's family members are on the top position of the party.

In last election in 2009, Congress had performed well in the centre and won 205 seats out of 545 and formed second consecutive government with the collaboration of region parties with the tag name of 'United Progressive Alliance'.
