Recent News on Conflict in Central African Republic
After the French withdrawal in 1997 elections were held in 1999 when Ange-Felix Patasse again came to power after a gap of four years. However his rule was troubled right from the beginning with the civil servants staging a general strike in 2000 over wage payments.
After surviving number of coup attempts Patasse was finally ousted in March 2003 when rebel leader Francois Bozize seized Bangui and declared himself President. Following this coup a new Constitution was approved in 2004 based on a referendum.
In 2006 the former President Ange-Felix Patasse was sentenced to 20 years of hard labour on fraud charges. In the October of the same year rebels sized Birao that led to combined action on part of the government and French troops.
The resulting spiral of violence led to the UNSC passing a resolution seeking the protection of civilians from violence spilling from neighbouring Darfur region of Sudan. In 2008 January President Bozzie appointed Faustin-Archange Touadera as Premier following the resignation of Elie Dote before the start of a censure motion against his government.
