Recent Migration, Political News and Events in Cape Verde
Cape Verdeans due to their poverty and recurring droughts that plague their country are one the largest migrant community in Africa. Today it is estimated that as many people live outside their country of birth as in it. From outside these migrant Cape Verdeans send money to their families that largely sustains this impoverished economy and also drives the domestic politics of this tiny country.
However with most of the European countries sending the illegal migrants back home, escaping the embedded poverty in Cape Verde is not easy.
On the political developments in Cape Verde, incumbent leader Pedro Pires won presidential elections in February 2006, gaining 51% of the vote and narrowly defeating his rival, Carlos Veiga.
Mr Pires who heads the Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), led the country from 1975 to 1990 and again in 2001. Over the years however, the PAICV has embraced free market economy by shedding its Marxist leanings.
