South Africa Playing with Two Levels of Economic Structure

The economy of South Africa is somewhat complicated compared to various other countries around it. There are two different levels to it. There is one side that competes against other developed countries while there is also a side that is coping with very basic infrastructure. This gives them the appearance of having an industrialized economy while still having many characteristics of one that belongs to a developing country.

Due to this unique type of economy, there is a gap between the formal and informal work sectors as well as an uneven distribution of the income levels and wealth. The formal sector, consisting of services, manufacturing, agriculture and mining is well developed, leaving others that require a lot of work.

The transition to a democratic government started in South Africa at the beginning of 1990. This started a debate concerning the way that economic policies were going to change. They needed to have some form of economic growth but they also needed to deal with socioeconomic disparities.

Since then, programs have been created to improve the standard of living for much of the population. The program provides housing and in fact, one million homes were set to be created in the span of five years. Education, health care and other basic services were included with these programs.

In the past decade, despite these efforts, the level of formal employment declined. There were some successes with financial discipline and macroeconomic stability but failed in other areas. There are still great gaps between income levels and the distribution of wealth.

The government has clearly been committed to creating open markets and with the privatization of business. There has also been a better climate for foreign investment. With these aspects more noticeable, South Africa has something to work with.

They won the bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, gaining them exposure and tourism revenues. They improved many parts of the country and may continue to see the positive results and feedback for their efforts.
